Dive In to Deepen Your Phishing Knowledge

One of the best ways to combat phishing at Northwestern is ensuring students, faculty, and staff have the resources and knowledge they need. Northwestern IT provides the campus community with the information and tools to understand the various types of phishing, how to identify suspicious emails before responding, and where to quickly and securely report phishing to the Information Security Office.

We are pleased to introduce two newly refreshed phishing web pages on the Northwestern IT website, each designed to prepare students, faculty, and staff for cybercriminals' attempts to harvest sensitive University and personal information. 

• Recognizing Phishing Attempts – Understand the warning signs, review the tricks that scammers use to gain your information, read best practices to protect yourself, and understand how to report a phish.
• Phishing Attempts at Northwestern – Review the most recent attempts reported and blocked in our environment, along with markers identifying signs the messages are fraudulent. 

To make the reporting process as easy as possible, both pages prominently feature a “Report a Phish” button at the top of the page. When clicking the button, users are presented with instructions on how to engage with the Information Security Office.

Northwestern IT continues to monitor and block attempts to attack Northwestern accounts through its Email Defense System. However, we encourage you to stay cybersecurity aware. Study these new pages, read the SecurityInsight blog, and follow the @Northwestern_IT Twitter account for more information security tips.
