Space Planning: Preliminary Key Dates and Changes Ahead in 1800 Sherman

Discussions around the new 1800 Sherman office space footprint have yielded a preliminary timeline that is subject to change based on many critical path items, such as the approval of pending permits with the City of Evanston, construction planning, and furniture delivery. Even with this uncertainty, we think it’s best to share a possible path forward that we will continue to update you on as we learn more.

Please take a moment to review the information below—especially those in 1800 Sherman—so you are aware of the current plans. Also, while these dates are tentative, continue preparing for this upcoming work by completing the necessary clean-up in your areas.

Preliminary Key Dates

  • September 16-22: Renovation activities are scheduled to begin in the southwest section of suite 2200 near conference room 2252, and staff will need to vacate the area prior to September 16. Impacted staff in this area will receive instructions from their management regarding temporary arrangements. This work starts a rolling construction timeline and begins our transition to a more efficient and collaborative workspace.
  • September 23 to October 11: Renovation activities are scheduled to begin in suite 2206 (VP/CIO, OPM, and former Change Management sections of the floor) and the section of 2200 surrounding the existing kitchen. Staff will need to vacate these areas before September 23. Similar to the above, impacted staff in these areas will receive instructions from their management regarding temporary arrangements.
  • Early to Mid-October: Likely beginning around October 7 and for four consecutive weeks—specific dates to be determined—the first floor will be vacated. The Endpoint Device Management team will have already moved to the seventh floor. They will remain there until the first floor reopens at the end of the project. The rest of the first-floor staff will be temporarily relocated, and their management will communicate these arrangements.
  • Early to Mid-November: All sections of floors one and two (both suites) are scheduled to open and be fully operational. At this time, we will begin hotdesking. More details about this effort will follow as November gets closer.

Virtual Drop-Ins to be Scheduled with Directors and Managers

We will schedule a series of weekly virtual drop-ins with directors and managers to address questions and provide further details—including visuals of the floor plans. These online meetings will allow attendees to learn more about the changes, ask questions, and discuss our new workspace so they are prepared to communicate with their teams.

As with any construction or renovation efforts, the timing of the work will remain fluid, and we know adjustments will be needed. Thank you in advance for your patience and flexibility this fall. Our communications efforts will ramp up to ensure anyone impacted has the necessary information. Please continue watching your inboxes for updates, including details on enhancements coming to 2020 Ridge.

Ultimately, this effort will provide a refreshed and optimized workspace that supports our hybrid work model, enhances our ability to collaborate effectively, and utilizes University space responsibly.
